The Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, also known as AECC or Contra Cancer, is an independent, self-funding national charity. The local branch in Torrevieja is run by a mixed Spanish and British committee from their offices in Calle La Calera 2, situated just off Calle Apolo, at the end of Avenida de Las Cortes Valencianas in Torrevieja.
The primary objective is the early detection of the three most common cancers in women and men: breast, cervical and prostate. To find out more and to register for an appointment please call in at the office, which is manned by English-speaking volunteers on Wednesdays between 09:00 and 13:00.
The Torrevieja branch also offer care and support to cancer patients in the Torrevieja hospital by providing a team of English and Spanish-speaking volunteers who each weekday visit both in-patients and those undergoing treatment in the day-centre. Support and counselling is also provided for the families of patients.
All these services are paid for by volunteer fundraising, by Car Boot Sales and Auctions and by sales in the Charity Shop that was recently opened in the Torrevieja office premises. Any donations of items for sale are most welcome at the shop in Calle La Calera 2. For more information, or to arrange an appointment please contact AECC on 965 716679, or see contacts page.
